What Is a Septic Inspection, and When Do I Need One?

Septic systems are an important part of our homes. They remove waste from toilets, sinks, washing machines and other household drains. If it doesn't work properly, the sewer can back up and create a hole in the ground near the septic tank, or it can back up from the house.

What Is a Septic System?

A septic system consists of pipes, tanks, pumps and other components. The main thing is the septic tank, which gets there after passing through the sewage system. Wastewater sits in a tank, passes through filters and is pumped into the ground.

Septic tanks are an alternative for homeowners who are not connected to the municipal sewer network. Not all homes have a septic system. Home buyers need to know if the home they are considering buying has a septic system.

When Do Homeowners Need a Septic Inspection?

Experts recommend that you schedule a checkup every three to five years. Even if the system appears to be working well, a thorough septic inspection can provide an accurate assessment of the system.

Also, schedule a septic inspection when you buy the property. Like a professional roof inspection, a septic inspection can detect problems that cannot be reached with a visual inspection.

How Often Should I Pump My Septic Tank?

The frequency of pumping depends on how much sewage is used in your home. A household uses about a gallon of water per sink. Every time the toilet is flushed, approximately 1 gallon of waste water goes into the septic tank.

A typical household needs septic tank service every three to five years. Homes with larger waste may require a shorter time. However, homes with smaller waste should have their septic tank inspected every three to five years to ensure the system is working properly.
